Why Hand-Grown and Hand-Made Skincare is the Future

Why Hand-Grown and Hand-Made Skincare is the Future

In today's skincare industry, many products—even those labeled as “clean beauty”—contain harmful chemicals and ingredients that compromise the health of your skin.  Sometimes this is intentional, such as in the use of certain fragrances or preservatives.  And sometimes this is “closer to unintentional”, as you see with news reports such as glyphosate being found in Girl Scout Cookies.  Oftentimes chemicals from industrial ag supply chains make their way into “healthy” processed foods and “clean beauty”.  Hand-grown and hand-made skincare products, however, offer distinct advantages by viewing the production, agriculture, maker and consumer as one holistic picture.

The Problem with Commercial Skincare

  • Harmful chemicals: Many mainstream skincare products contain preservatives, stabilizers, and synthetic fragrances linked to endocrine disruption and cancers.

  • Industrial botanicals: Even clean beauty products often use mass-harvested, mass-dried, and mass-packaged botanicals.  Botanicals such as these are grown in industrial soils with reductionist farming methods, realizing poor botanicals of thin health.  These botanicals lose their (minimal to begin with) vitality and nutrient density over time as they move through the supply chain of third party sellers on their way to a skincare formulator.

  • How clean is clean: While clean beauty brands generally avoid the same level of chemical additives as mainstream products, the ingredients are generally grown using industrial farming methods that involve toxic chemicals and non-organic practices. These methods compromise the quality of the plants and their ability to deliver maximum skin benefits.  Even Organic practices have room for questioning.  For example, did you know that Organic fertilizer is made from factory farmed animals (bone, blood and feather meal)?  Most people do not, and those who seek Organic as a holistic and clean supply chain would never imagine this was the case.

The Superiority of Hand-Grown, Hand-Made Skincare

To ensure the highest purity and nutrient density, it's essential to grow your own botanicals through regenerative, beyond-organic methods.  In our case, we follow the insights of Rudolf Steiner (founder of Biodynamics). This guarantees that the plants are free from synthetic inputs and harvested at their peak as we never introduce a single store-bought chemical into the garden (including Organic ones).  Our flagship offering, the Summer Solstice Serum, is made by blending 7 solar and lunar botanical infusions together with zero other ingredients added (not even essential oils!).

1. Freshness Equals Potency

Growing botanicals in this way ensures the highest possible nutrient density (read: efficacy for end user), which is something that mass-produced ingredients simply can't provide.  Furthermore, our botanicals are harvested and processed in the smallest of batches, allowing for maximum quality control.  Commercial dried herbs can even be multiple seasons old, aka long dead.  How could this possibly serve your well being?

2. Eliminating Factory Contamination

Hand-blending and bottling eliminates risks of contamination from factory equipment, where industrial processes can introduce PFAS or “forever chemicals” that contaminate products simply from the lube and oils that the machines require to operate.  Studies have found forever chemicals throughout the supply chain, including single ingredient products such as sparkling water.  As a result, these chemicals are now found in nearly all breast milk, sperm, and umbilical cords.  These should be considered crimes against humanity.

3. Energetic Integrity

Every product carries the mark of its maker. Products made by hand—grown in harmony with nature and harvested with care—retain the love and intention of their creator, offering a deeper, more meaningful connection between product and user, user and self, and self with the whole of Nature.  We as modern people have become accustomed to the energetic imprint of machinery.  The good news, however, is that this acclimation now affords us the instant ability to recognize a hand-crafted artisan product the moment we hold, feel, touch, smell or taste it.  Think of the difference between grandma’s pie and a machine-made pie of the same ingredients.  No contest.

A Return to True Skincare

Hand-grown, hand-made skincare is not just about better ingredients; it’s about reconnecting with nature and embracing the wisdom of our past for the well being of our future.
